Thanks for sharing these Kee! The HMV article was really good. but wow, the Creative Review interview is just as unflinching as his recent podcasts. We are seeing a truly humbled James thanks in part to the documentary, and I think him barring his soul on his past is resulting in a clear mind to allow for his most personal music to date.

This was another great Q&A! How about this nugget: Lily Moayeri (Under the Radar): The Road: Part 1 is the first UNKLE album with you officially as a solo artist. How is that different than before? James Lavelle: Solo in the sense that I'm not in partnership, in a marriage, a democratic marriage, anymore. I'm on my own. I will not ever partner with anyone else ever again. Tim Goldsworthy, DJ Shadow, Richard File, Pablo Clements, everybody came out of Mo' Wax. The easiest way to describe it is you go out with someone and then you go out with their best mate and their best mate and their best mate and their best mate and in the end you're sticking to the same politics of 20 years ago. I felt like Elizabeth Taylor. I've been through four marriages. The drama and the energy spent on all that stuff was too much. It's not healthy. I'm 43 years old. I've made some mistakes. I've been involved in some amazing things and I've done some stupid things, pushed it maybe too far hedonistically in my career. Then Gavin Clark [UNKLE vocalist] killed himself and that was pretty bad. A lot of the energy around it wasn't being very productive and it was sort of fulfilling everyone's addictions shall we say, whether that was music equipment or other things. When the last thing came to an end. It wasn't very pleasant. Also: "I didn't want to make a rock record, an electronic record, a hip-hop record. I just wanted to take the elements of what I think makes an UNKLE record work. I wanted to get back to the basis of the emotional, what it makes me feel like to make music. Everybody that got involved had that same idea."

Here's a Q& A with Camden New Journal where James discusses each of the upcoming Mo'Wax themed nights at the Jazz Cafe. Really wish I could fly overseas and attend! camdennewjournal.com/article/the-man-from-unkleYou gotta check the part out about almost remixing the Star Wars theme! “There was a funny scenario with the first prequel, where we were in talks about DJ Shadow remixing the Star Wars theme,” he said. “We were in talks with Lucasfilm for Episode 1, but it didn’t happen. I loved Star Wars in certain elements, but culture has moved on. For me, it’s now a massive merchandise enterprise. I’m nostalgic about the first three films, but I hated the next three. “One of the biggest disappointments was when I was invited to the premiere of Episode 1: walking the red carpet, DJing the party the night before and then seeing the film and being horrified.”

Nice interview - great find Kee!
Great to hear JL is in such a good headspace - lets hope that positive and creative energy brings us all more UNKLE goodness (although my bank account won't thank me for it)

JL's favourite 13 albums. Some really good info in there, like the Badly Drawn Boy track on PF was meant to be a Fleetwood Mac cover!

I read that BDB was due to fly out to LA to record some more vocal tracks, but he won the pub quiz the night before and got pissed and overslept. I'll try to dig out he relevant magazine to check if I'm remembering correctly.

It would have been dreadful to have someone with a big ego involved with UNKLE.
