This weekend, the trumpeter Toshinori Kondo died peacefully in Japan, aged 71. You might remember him from early 80s Herbie Hancock albums, or his collaboration with DJ Krush, Ki Oku. I enjoyed those as well as his work with Charged and Method of Defiance, and his two guest spots on the most recent DJ Krush album.
For the last few years, he sold his music directly, first shipping CDs and later going to Bandcamp. Only last year I ordered an album direct from him, and when it got lost in the post and returned to Japan, he resent it with a hand-written letter apologizing for the delay! He also started a YouTube channel earlier this year, and some of the videos included English translations, and are worth a look. I’m sad I won’t get to hear any more new music from this talented man who didn’t care for boundaries or genres.
