Did he? Who did he leave in charge? Was the problem of Beggars Group/XL owning half the catelogue and the other half owned by Universal ever resolved? Who owns the rights now? How did the Jordan Fields LP get put out with no CEO? How did the the Parsley Sound album get put out and published A YEAR LATER?
Just a few questions I've been wondering about since the Beggars forum was shut down, you know.

As I've previously pointed out, there are so many mistakes on that website, the whole thing can almost be disregarded. Most of those facts could easily have been checked via discogs.com, but are still wrong. It's a bit embarrassing really.
As for JL's situation when the label folded, who knows? I'm sure everyone involved would have a slightly different understanding of what happened. I've never heard a proper explanation of the way Mo'Wax ended. I think James just got tired. He mentioned something about 'releasing 200 records in 5 years' (give or take), and was probably just a bit tired/bored of all the legal rights issues. Thus couldn't be arsed any more.EDIT: found it

Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration though? I thought that there were only about 160 releases over a ten-year period.

The last item with the MW logo on there was Never, Never Land, and it wasn't on Mo'Wax... IIRC.
Ironically, Mo'Wax folded because of Unkle. James dropped the ball in 97/98 when he finally got fully involved in Psyence Fiction and its promotion to the detriment of the label. Not sure how many copies it sold but I remember (a) in a DJ Shadow retrospective he bitched that Josh got all the cash because he was listed as composer and producer of almost every track, (b) after MW folded, lots of ex-MW heads (Attica Blues, Peshay, Luke Vibert) complained that James had pretty much ignored them after 96/97 because he was consumed with PF.
We tend to forget how much MW stuff was just licensed from other labels in the latter years, like Money Mark, Dr. Octagon, Innerzone Orchestra, Sukia, ost DJ Krush albums, Liquid Liquid, all Major Force releases, all Solesides/Quannum material, Magic Mike, Divine Styler, Nigo... so there's not a ton of Mo'Wax-only material out there post-96 anyway.

Yeah probably an exaggeration, there are about 500 in discogs.com altogether, but can't be bothered checking it out properly. Depends on what you count as a record really. There must be loads of releases including all the promo versions of everything.
Either way they put out a tonne of quality records (as well as toys, prints, art shows etc.) in quite a small period of time. Not to mention all the dissing he got in the press for no real reason. So can't blame JL for wanting a break. Don't know how many people were in the Mo'Wax team though, it's not like he was doing it all alone.

I did state in an earlier post that for some reason Mo'Wax Labels Ltd/ Arts is still functioning...they've not even been declared dormant.
I didn't see the ex-MW artists interviews complaining, but I might have a look. One thing is for certain- Luke Vibert did NOT have kind words for the label or for James when interviewed 5 years back.

I don't think Sam Sever ever got paid. In fact, not many people released more than on LP on Mo'Wax. Only Money Mark I think.

So, as someone previously mentioned, yes Attica Blues weren't exactly pleased with the outcome of the signing. It seems like at some point (A&M are mentioned...) it just became unbearable for artists on the label to deal with getting stuff output. [/color][/quote] I interviewed Sam back in 2005 for Beastiemania: "I haven't dealt with Mo Wax since 1995. I just found out recently about the "Zone Alone" release or test pressings myself??? I've also never received a royalty statement or money for "What's That Sound?" or any other songs of mine they've included on their Headz compilations, etc. Live and learn." "Zone Alone" was a follow up tune to "What's that sound?". The 2nd 12" I compiled for them in 95 contained a few tunes "Zone Alone", "Lost In Space" and "Beautiful Thing". Your guess is as good as mine as to what tunes are on the test pressing? I submitted 12 songs to Mo Wax. I wouldn't be surprised if they started popping up one day? I really don't have much to say about James Lavelle or Mo Wax except I appreciated what they were releasing at the time and their brief support of my project in 94-95. I've already read Astro's interviews but not the Attica Blues and Luke Vibert ones. I now understand better why it's so hard to get a reply (or at least a positive reply) to emails I send to these artists... Not sure I want to know more about the dark side of Mo' Wax.
