I would recommend Silent Poets. They were a duo (now just one bloke) who released a series of downtempo hip hop / dub albums. They remixed "Tender" by Attica Blues, and they also had a track on The Art Of War.

Funkungfusion was excellent, still my favorite Ninja comp. I seem to remember the liner notes to the 10th anniversary set (Xen Cuts? I think?) claiming it had been a miss-step. I humbly disagree.

I must check this! Ninja hardly mis-step with any of their releases at all! Can't think of a bad one of the top of my head.

They also have a couple of compilations which would be a good start.

The closest I can think of to The Prunes (both in style and also, funnily enough, geographically speaking) is Boulevard Connection who did the excellent Sut Min Pik EP on Fondle Em which is backed with instrumentals for each track. Also, I just discovered today that Sek from Boulevard Connection was also in a group called Nutsek who released a few tracks and a single EP on New Breed. With both Fondle Em and New Breed being NYC labels, I'd guess you should be able to track those down more easily from within the US. Also on New Breed, Tommy Guerrero did an excellent EP as Beats of San Francisco. A couple of the tracks were also on his Backintheday 10" (released on Thomas Campbell's Galaxia label under his own name).
