I saw on Discogs someone has added Shadow, The Raptor Of Hip Hop – Funkenklein's Tape (Tape #1) and that this other site has some pictures of several other early Shadow tapes, and they're selling them for $4000 each. They list them as: DJ Shadow Beat Resume (self-released, USA) (Original Cassette Tape, Original J-Card & Label Artwork by 8th Wonder) $4000 DJ Shadow Funkenklien’s Tape #1 of 3 (self-released, USA) (Original Cassette Tape, Original J-Card & Label Artwork by 8th Wonder) $4000 DJ Shadow Funkenklien’s Tape #2 of 3 (self-released, USA) (Original Cassette Tape, Original J-Card & Label Artwork by 8th Wonder) $4000 DJ Shadow Hollywood Basic Props (self-released, USA) (Original Cassette Tape, Original J-Card & Label Artwork by 8th Wonder) $4000 I don't have a spare $1600 to buy these right now, but has anyone else heard these mixes? Are they different to Hip Hop Reconstruction From The Ground Up? Also according to Shadow's site there were three of those tapes, #1, #1.5, and #2. As far as I know only two of those have been released digitally...? edit: I just saw Stretch Armstrong wrote about meeting Shadow in 1991 and he describes how Shadow gave him a mixtape. He had put it on Soundcloud but it's been taken down. He describes the tracklist which doesn't sound like the Four Track Mix which was part of Shadow's Four Track Era collection.

The DAT only has the Shadow remix of Zimbabwe Legit. All the tapes and the DAT are in the hands of the same guy in the States. He never disclosed a price but he declined a $1000 proposal for 2 that I've made before.
I found out about the tapes when they were showed at that art gallery online, but the price is.... too high. I've checked online and no other tape was ever sold for that price, not even a Prince tape.
Shadow told me that it wasn't making any sense to sell these tapes at that price. The music is mostly released by now. Of course it's more about the old school early work and drawings I guess.
The tapes and DAT were handed to Dave "Funken" Klein when Shadow aired on KDVS in 1990/1991. That's his legacy who got rid of it and it ended in that store. I only understood when he posted the DAT last year. The gallery was just the in-between agent.

At those prices, I think the person doesn't really want to sell them. They are hoping to find someone who had 'more dollars than sense'. Shadow undoubtably has a popular following. But even similar obscurities from bigger (ie more well known) artists don't command that kind of money.
