Paul Mogg ("quiet", former desktop publisher) and Pablo Clements ("out there", former plumbing and ventilation engineer) first became friends after meeting each other at just 5 years old, in the Somerset town of Yeovil, UK. As they grew up they shared a love of hip hop and disco as well as the art of crate digging. Sometime later they met Lionel Kisnorbo ("thinking person", former video editor from Brighton) and the three of them became known as the Psychonauts, after seeing an Observer article about America's psychedelic gurus Leary, Huxley and McKenna.
They started a club night known as the "Night Of Cookers" and mixed up hip hop, house and techno. They sent an early mix tape to Tim Goldsworthy, who was working at Mo Wax and part of label boss James Lavelle's UNKLE project at the time. The mix became a favourite of James, who brought the trio to London giving them a residency at his Dusted party. They also played at Brighton's Heavenly Social night. The trio were responsible for mixing the notable "James Lavelle" Cream Live mix as well as his Tribal Gathering mix; both well worth checking out.
The trio spent a week preparing and practising for the Essential Mix, finally recording it live on four turntables. Interweaving ludicrously rare white labels, moody atmospherics from the usual Mo Wax suspects, Britpop-era Oasis over hip hop beats, and dialogue taken from films such as Star Wars, The Andromeda Strain and Psycho, alongside Pablo's deft scratching techniques, the mix is truly cinematic music. Aurally and technically it's from another dimension.
Lionel left and the Psychonauts became a duo. The studio soon beckoned, with the pair getting their first taste of production action with Major Force's Masayuki Kudo. Resulting single "Hot Blood" may have gone over the heads of more traditional Mo Wax heads, but the track proved to be quite the cult hit, with James Murphy citing its punk-funk sound as an inspiration for his production work on The Rapture's debut album. In 1998 they managed to fit most of the Mo Wax back catalogue into a 40 minute mix known as "Time Machine". They did not release their first single until 2001s "Hot Blood / Invading Space" single. The album, "Songs For Creatures", was released on International Deejay Gigolo Records in 2003 after Mo Wax had ground to halt in 2002.

This a brand new never released before digitisation of the mix. It has been lovely looked after and ripped by monkeyboyram of The Mixing Bowl in 2011. I got hold of the lossless file and have prepared it for "release", painstakingly finding out a few of the unknown tracks and correcting others. Even creating a cue sheet for the trainspotter's pleasure. No destructive audio changes have been made except for a quick fade in and fade out. I even unearthed my own copy of Mixmag's cassette tape cover they used to print in their magazines. That, alongside some other Psychonauts imagery and magazine articles, can be found in the "images" folder.
In my opinion this is in the top 10 greatest ever Essential Mixes. I remember copying a Uni friend's tape of it back in early 1996 and listened to it so much. As a big fan of Massive Attack and Portishead, for me this mix took the musical style of hip hop and trip hop, smashed them together with some early beats and breaks and jungle in a more upbeat turntablist eclectic party style with a load of film samples thrown in for good measure. If for some reason this one passed you by or at the time you didn't "get it", then give it another listen or two or three and see how it speaks to you now, 22 years later. - jaybeee from tmb.dj

Welcome to tonight's Essential Mix with me Pete Tong for another beautiful continuous musical journey into Sunday morning; when the sun just about decides to come up. This week making their debut straight out of under 21s team making their first full-team appearance, they are officially capped, it's the Psychonauts; out of Yeovil & Brighton collectively. Three guys, four turntables and a very clever performance indeed. Do enjoy it, turn it up, two hours from the Psychonauts.

A lot of work went into the mix, we used to put a lot of work into all of our DJ sets around this time. Spending every day practising and thinking about what might work. If my memory serves me correct we spent about a week planning and rehearsing it. Listening to it again now I think it's great, it really captures what we were about at this particular moment in time.
