2 users have Headz Headz Hedaz on Discogs now... And... 3! This will end like Rock On, James will open the rest of his stock and everyone will have a copy. 'Rock on' such a grail item for ages and i ended up with like four copies. I hope this doesn't go the same way.......but wouldn't mind seeing it reissued, properly. Would anyone mind sharing 'Zone Alone', my copy got lost to a virus on an old laptop? Cheers

I'm sure Peder is correct. But it would be pretty sweet if hundreds were suddenly discovered and we all got one for peanuts.
Unless they're dubplates it's pretty unusual/expensive to only press 5 copies isn't it?

Test pressings are made in the same way as normal records aren't they? It's just quite a long process with all the master plates and metal stampers and all that. The actual pressing process and plastic used is minimal, they should have made a few extra while they were at it!

Yep, TPs are just a small first batch of the final pressing. They are expensive to make because of the small number of copies, and the plant is never sure that they'll run a full batch if the matrix happens to sound bad.
10 or 20 years ago it was usual to get 50+ TPs made as they were given away as very early promo copies to DJs, but in 2016 I think that 5 copies is not a surprising number because nowadays they are nothing more than test pressings.
However, because Headz Headz Headz was made in 1995, I won't be surprised if a few more copies of the 7" surface in the near future

Exactly. Making 50 records would only cost slightly more than making 5. But unless James just has a big pile of these exclusive test pressings it does seem like he liked to make very small numbers of test pressings - judging by how they never turn up for sale. According to the Prunes this release was never meant to end up as an official release. This was intended as a flyer for the Headz Club. This is the legend we are all familiar with, but I have no idea how a vinyl record can be used as a flyer!

I hope this doesn't go the same way.......but wouldn't mind seeing it reissued, properly. I highly doubt more copies will surface like in the case of Rock On. Also, keep in mind that there are two versions of the Rock On 12" on MoWax. The version that was once rare is: MW070DJ (single sided with etching). However, the standard release: MW070 only exists as a low run test pressing. More info here: unkle77.proboards.com/thread/6870/faq-unkle-rock-on?page=1As for Zone Alone, there are 2 (maybe 3) different versions. It has been discussed here a few times. But basically there is a 4 song standard release on vinyl (MW050) and then there is a 3 song DJ version that is etched from a lathe. The info on the Discogs entry is incorrect and needs to be adjusted: www.discogs.com/Sam-Sever-Zone-Alone/release/1227050 and yes, that is my copy used as the photo, but again, the track listing shown is for the non DJ release. According to the Prunes this release was never meant to end up as an official release. This was intended as a flyer for the Headz Club. This is the legend we are all familiar with, but I have no idea how a vinyl record can be used as a flyer! My guess is that they intended it to be a flexidisc. Futura was supposed to do the artwork. The project was dropped once deemed too expensive.

I think the issue with Rock On was that the etched version was very hard to come by until JL opened his archive (first time round) and sold loads of it on eBay. The first copies that went on went for a few quid but i picked one up for a couple of ££ towards the end of the run. Shame he didn't find a few copies of Zone Alines i'd love it in my collection. Those test pressings are odd, some random ones surfaced. I got the test pressing of 'Time Machine' as it was placed in an Urban Tribe sleeve. The seller hadn't spotted it. Not too sure if that one is rare or not?

Don't get it confused with white label promos. MW made A LOT of white labels back in the early days as they were a less expensive way to make a promo (ie no label art, etc). Most TPs will come with a generic label from the pressing plant. The early ones are black/white or white (like in the case of the Prunes 7") and later pressings in the catalog are usually green/white or red/silver.

Sometimes audiophiles will argue that test presses of mass produced records sound better since they are the first off the line and the pressing plates are 'fresh' and not worn out after pressing thousands of records.

Ooooh, that is actually a good point! The first presses will definitely sound better. Whether you'll notice or not is a different issue!

The best example is the Where Does The Night Fall 3XLP test press. The regular pressing is on picture discs and the sound is comprised, but the black vinyl test pressings sound amazing!

Forgive me for raising an apparently long-dead thread, but is this Headzheadzheadz repress still likely? Has it happened and I missed it?

I would also be mega-interested in one. I'd even pay for an mp3 rip!
Not happened to my knowledge.
