So record collection getting pretty vast, so thought I would get some Mo'Wax vinyls, especially now since it's not that expensive, and I better do this before I get kids. But to be honest, I was never into the whole Mo'Wax scene apart from Shadow and UNKLE. Asked Pablo about it yesterday and he said essentials are La Funk Mob, Shadow and Krush (he showed me an unreleased Mo'wax version of the Psychonauts LP as well, which seems like the holy grail(?).
Later realized that Pablo did the whole Mo'Wax megamix - Which is going to be a treat cause embarrassingly, I never heard it. Also just now realized that La Funk Mob = Cassius. Obviously I'm a complete fool...
Anyway, so what are the essentials? The Top 10's. And I love art as much as music, so after just scrolling through the list - There seems to be a few I need to grab for the art alone.
I got Endtroducing and Never, Never Land. And a couple of South 7". I also just now ordered U.N.K.L.E.* - Berry Meditation (12", Etch, Cle) - £5.99 for a mint copy?! that is not how I remember Mo'wax... Deborah Anderson - Lonely Without You (12", Pin) Psychonauts, The* - Time Machine - A MoWax Restrospective Mix (LP, Mixed)
And if I can be so obnoxious to ask which version I should get... (for instance, which is the Psyence Fiction LP to get? And Survival Pack, there are 2 versions?) And i need to limit myself to vinyl, and I can't simply buy them all - I do want to spend time with these, so I'll keep it limited to 10.
Fun fact = Got the Geisha remix (anyone remember that one) on vinyl cause I've always loved it, noticed the credits consisting of the original UNKLE members (except JL) - I thought they never actually released anything - Did they do more remixes as UNKLE?

Well i've just noticed there is a MoWax Excursions (sub?)label that has some great drum and bass/jungle stuff on it along with some in your face type stuff. It feels like a mini Headz!
Maybe not a must have but considering they are great tracks, if you like that sort of thing, and with some quite nice artwork i'm getting a bit obsessed with getting them all, especially as they seem quite cheap to get second hand.

Yea - "Excursions" is pretty great... I've got a few of the 12"es There's also a cd compilation of those releases as well - but it doesn't contain all of the stuff from the records www.discogs.com/Various-Excursions/release/8064Mojib - you didn't know that Pabs did the "Time Machine Retrospective Mix"? Tsk tsk There are a couple of different versions of the Psyence Fiction 'Survival Pack' - but that's basically due to most of them being incomplete (apparently there's a lot of stickers, and I THINK there's supposed to be some sort of balloon as well(?) I've never seen (in person) a COMPLETE PF Survival pack www.discogs.com/UNKLE-Psyence-Fiction-Survival-Kit/master/81322as far as essential Mo Wax 12"es... let me get back to you... I would definitely try and seek out at least one or two of the Attica Blues singles (which look quite nice) OH and this version of "Be There" www.discogs.com/UNKLE-Featuring-Ian-Brown-Be-There/release/153004

Wow, that could be a very long discussion. To make it short (for now) I'd say that you need : - Headz (try to get the embossed one) - Headz 2A + Headz 2B
That's the perfect starter pack when it comes to the music, they cover what Mo' Wax essentially is. And they're beautiful objects too.

Aside from the obvious staples (...Endtroducing, Psyence Fiction, Strictly Turntablized, etc), these full length releases should be checked out:
Parsley Sound - Parsley Sounds LP Tommy Guerrero - Soul Food Taqueria Psychonauts - Time Machine Blackalicious - Melodica EP South - From Here On In DJ Qbert - Shadow Mix (*I don't know why this is listed as a Shadow release). DJ Krush - Holonic 'The Self Megamix' Malcolm Catto - Popcorn Bubblefish

Thank you! PF Surivial Pack - I don't mind if it's not complete, but the one on there seems to be in rough shape. Also, yes - that I didn't know Pabs had done the Time Machine mix wasn't one of my proudest moments - I don't think he noticed though ;-) Wow, that could be a very long discussion. To make it short (for now) I'd say that you need : - Headz (try to get the embossed one) - Headz 2A + Headz 2B That's the perfect starter pack when it comes to the music, they cover what Mo' Wax essentially is. And they're beautiful objects too. Headz 2A ordered! My JL alarm went off when I saw the 2B version though, since the cover is inverse - Why is the release split in two? 2B isn't leftovers? Not sure which of the two Headz 1 is the embossed one - I suspect it's the original pressing? Aside from the obvious staples (...Endtroducing, Psyence Fiction, Strictly Turntablized, etc), these full length releases should be checked out: Parsley Sound - Parsley Sounds LP Tommy Guerrero - Soul Food Taqueria Psychonauts - Time Machine Blackalicious - Melodica EP South - From Here On In DJ Qbert - Shadow Mix (*I don't know why this is listed as a Shadow release). DJ Krush - Holonic 'The Self Megamix' Malcolm Catto - Popcorn Bubblefish Slow down fhuz! Strictly Turntablized? Ok, ordered!Psyence Fiction? Yeah, but which version? Also, I do own Parsley sound as it's one of my favorit LP's of all time. And with South... You're not going to like this, but I do prefer the newer South. See, that's why I never got into Mo'Wax cause every time I mentioned that, I was cut off from the conversation Thanks so far guys - Keep em' coming and I'll keep ordering!

The standard 2xLP version of Psyence Fiction is fine. The deluxe package MW085'S' has better artwork, the music is the same.
You like the newer South?? I cannot believe it. I think moving away from their 'rougher' edge is what killed the band. No disrespect to those guys, but they direction they went was far too sensitive.
I was lucky to see them live a few times. The first in 2002 and they opened with 'Broken Head' and even played their instrumental remix of 'If Dolphins Were Monkeys'. So fucking dope!

I got to see them play Fabric when Lavelle hosted Room 1. They were stunning. Then they decided that they wanted to sound like Coldplay..

Ordered both. Thanks! Was just about to ask you Mog what's reasonable to pay - And holy crap, in 2007 I asked the same question, in this very thread. Thanks for the FAQ!

I played around with this list for a few hours this morning and to pick just 10 items was really difficult. In choosing just ten items I've omitted some of my favourite tracks (like Jordan Fields - Moments In Dub (MWR155LP) and a whole host of other stuff by Money Mark/South/Nigo etc etc).
Mo'Wax was all about the entire 'package' so I've picked a bunch of vinyl singles and albums, DJ Mixes on CD, Artwork and Action Figures which would make up my top 10:
1 Air - Modular Mix............................................................... [MW047: DJ Cam Remix] 2 Deborah Anderson - Lonely Without You ...........................[MW075: Translucent Pink Vinyl / Stereo MC's Remix] 3 Major Force - The Big Brawl............................................... [MW082CDXR: 30 Minute Alex Lim DJ Mix on CD] 4 DJ Shadow - WDYSLL Parts 1,3 and 4..................................[MW027P1,P2, P3: 3x10" records with artwork by REQ-1] 5 James Lavelle & Mo'Wax Crew - 60 Min's Of Mo'Wax Shit..[MWIN006: DJ Mix on CD] 6 Headz (A Soundtrack Of Experimental Beathead Jams............[MWLP026: Album on Vinyl] 7 DJ Krush - Hollonic (The Self Megamix)............................... [MW088CD: DJ Mix on CD] 8 UNKLE - Psyence Fiction Survival Kit.....................................[MW085DJ/DJ5/DJSP: Pop up record sleeve, I don't care about which version it is!] 9 Unkle - Tactical Assault Pointman (Action Figure in Green).......[Mo'Wax Associated] 10 Mo'Wax Urban Archealogy Prints and Invitation Event Pack....[MWA004: 50+ Individual Prints of Mo'Wax related artwork]
