Hey Matt,
Yeah … It was a great night. One of those “game changer” moments really. It sent me off in a new direction musically overnight. The vibe was great… although you could hardly breath at times from smoke and paint fumes..... Swifty was spraying the walls in the club while the music played. Not often you see that!
Leeds was pretty shit at the time … I was a regular at nights like The Orbit which was strictly techno and had lost its magic as far as I was concerned. The crowd used be pretty varied but by 94 was full on ‘tops off’ raver teds and the BPMs were out of control. The house nights were getting progressively more fluffy and hand bag, and even the more discerning stuff like Hard Times and Back To Basics were very ‘dressy’ and a bit up there own arse. I was looking for something more eclectic and progressive … and that night I found it. It had a big effect and I ended up obsessed with the Mo Wax vibe and went off in a different direction totally, buying loads of stuff on Pork, G-Stone, Ninjatunes, Fat City, Grand Central… it was a brilliant time to be young and clubbing as a new scene seemed to be inventing itself and changing week by week. I bought shit loads of records and many still sound brilliant now.
I got the tape from a short lived record shop that was in one of the Leeds arcades … I can’t remember its name but it sold a lot of downbeat and electronic stuff like La Funk Mob, Global Communication, Warp, G-Stone etc. I can’t say for certain but I think the tape was recorded by the Funky Mule lot, who then made those tapes and sold them via shops in Leeds. I’m still trying to ID some of the tracks… The one that samples a loop from Windy C by ‘100% Poison’ and a the “Back In The Day when I was young” vocal mixed over the top has eluded me all these years. If anyone knows it, me and several friends would love to know.
