Hey folks... I've been working on an UNKLE chronology, trying to piece together their development over the mysterious early days up to Psyence Fiction. I'll look at the File years some other time.
Here's what I've worked out:
Feb 94: The Time Has Come (UNKLE v EMS Orchestra)
U.N.K.L.E. is JL, TG, Kudo and Tosh
Dec 94: The Time Has Come EP
Sep 95: Recording sessions in LA (was Tosh present?)
Money Mark guests.
Berry Meditation and Garage Piano recorded.
Circa Oct 95: James returns to UK
Dewback Recorded (since A Trip To The Chip Shop was released in 95, and James mentioned more sessions set up at home after the month in LA) - Kudo not present, but Patterson and D'Angelo of Attica Blues guest. Does anyone have an exact release date for the compilation?
1995: Rock On recorded. This wasn't in LA since Money Mark isn't present, but it was 1995 since there exists a '95 Edit'. Can anyone narrow down when this was recorded?
August 96: DJ Shadow joins UNKLE
September 96: Lonely Soul recorded with Richard Ashcroft. DJ Shadow only producing member of UNKLE.
November 96: Bloodstain demo recorded.
Berry Meditation test pressing issued.
December 96: Goldworthy leaves. Anyone know when Kudo left?
1st half 1997: Ape Shall Never Kill Ape and Last Orgy 3 recorded.
This is a guess, since both tracks feature Kudo and Lavelle, but no Goldsworthy, so it's feasibly after Dec 97. The promo for Ape vs. Mo'Wax came out Oct 97, so it took place before then. Perhaps they were recorded while James was in Japan compiling the compilation - especially as both James and Nigo recorded skits for the comp. Does anyone have any more info on this? It's tempting to place these before Lonely Soul because of the personnel, but stylistically they fit between Soul and Rabbit.
June 97: Rabbit In Your Headlights recorded.
U.N.K.L.E is dead. Long live UNKLE!
August 97: Chaos and Bloodstain recorded.
September 97: Strings for PF recorded.
Oct 97: Guns Blazing recorded
Ape vs Mo Wax released
Feb 98: The Knock recorded, sans vox.
Nursery Rhyme recorded.
Japanese trilogy released.
March 98:
Aborted cover of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac
Intro recorded
Vox added to The Knock
Apr 98
DJ Shadow holes up in his home studio and produces UNKLE Main Title and Celestial Annihilation. Presumably he also created Unreal here too, since it is another Shadow solo track?
Jun 98
Album is sequenced
Aug 24th 1998
PSYENCE FICTION released
Late 1998
Be There promo released - when did Ian Brown get out of jail and record his parts? Shadow had left by this point as Unreal was mixed by Rich File into Be There
Jan 99
UNKLE live is JL and the Scratch Perverts - recorded by NME in Jan. Shadow is long gone!
2000
James and Rich do Narco Tourist with Slam, before May (see May, below) - anyone know the exact date?
March 2000
Recording Sexy Beast. UNKLE is JL, RF and South (news story in NME)
May 2000
JL announces he is putting UNKLE on hiatus to return to DJing (NME news story). UNKLE is dead. Long live UNKLESOUNDS!

Can anyone fill in some of the gaps? I know it's geeky, but what else am I going to do? Work? ;D
